50 gratitude journaling prompts

Keeping a gratitude journal, or answering gratitude prompts, trains your mind to notice the good things by gradually shifting the brain from negative biases toward appreciating more positive moments.

Studies have found that people who regularly record what they're thankful for report feeling happier, bounce back faster from setbacks, and carry less tension in their daily lives. Gratitude journaling can boost self-esteem, build stronger relationships, reduce materialism, and for some, can actually decrease physical pain.

Before tackling daily prompts, take a moment to identify your broader goals. This can be anything from wanting to feel more positive throughout your day-to-day experiences, strengthen mindfulness (noticing the little things like how good your coffee tastes or appreciating a lovely view from your window), train your mind to focus more on the positive outcomes in your life rather than dwelling on setbacks, improve physical health, or boost self-esteem by acknowledging personal strengths and achievements that you might typically overlook or minimize.

How to start a gratitude journal

▸ Be specific: instead of, “I’m thankful for my family,” try, "My partner made me coffee"

▸ Depth over breadth: rather than writing a long list, focus on deep, personal details about a few things

▸ Consistency matters: set a daily time, like before bed or after waking for the day

▸ Review past entries when struggling to find gratitude on difficult days
